Our lives are busier than ever. Nutrition and lifestyle recommendations often leave us confused, overwhelmed, and discouraged. Being happy and healthy seems like more of a struggle than before. Medical conditions complicate matters even further.
I understand how you feel. Before I became a Dietitian / Nutrition Therapist, I lived a hectic life and worked in corporate finance for almost a decade. Stress eventually made my IBS symptoms unbearable.
I was one of the first clinical patients in the US given the Low FODMAP diet. Did this fix everything? I really wish the answer was ‘yes’, but nothing is that easy. At the time, I approached foods with an all-or-nothing attitude. I couldn’t understand how I was still experiencing symptoms while following such a strict diet.
I’m the type of person that looks for patterns and opportunities. I quickly realized that the low FODMAP diet helped, but wasn’t a cure. I decided to challenge myself to reintroduce ALL of the foods that I missed, from every single category of FODMAPs.
Here we are, 6 years later, and I can eat most foods without any problems. I’ve identified foods that I can eat in varying amounts and in combination with others, without provoking symptoms. I realized that the low FODMAP diet, like any medical diet, should be approached cautiously, with an abundance mentality, and with an individualized approach.
